EG type examination of chainsaws
Requirements for EG type examination in relation to CE marking apply when the manufacturer of a portable chainsaw intended for wood, as defined in Annex 4 of the Machinery Directive, has chosen not to fully comply with the harmonized standard. SMP is accredited to perform EG type examinations in this field.
Purpose
SMP is accredited by SWEDAC and has been serving as a notified body for EG type examinations in this field for 25 years. We actively participate at the EU level in interpreting and revising harmonized standards for portable chainsaws for wood, which gives us extensive expertise in this area.
Requirements for EG type examination apply to chainsaws where the manufacturer has chosen alternative technical and safety solutions that deviate from the guidance provided by the harmonized standard, which is essentially advisory in nature. Most manufacturers choose to have their chainsaws undergo EG type examination. With SMP as your trusted advisor, you can minimize the risk of encountering issues regarding CE marking in Sweden or other European countries.
Method
During an EG type examination, we assess whether the chainsaw, as well as its accompanying documentation, meets the requirements for CE marking. The results of the EG type examination are summarized in a report. Typically, the manufacturer sends the chainsaw to SMP for review, which includes not only the EG type examination but also various tests necessary to demonstrate compliance with all requirements. These requirements apply to chainsaws intended for forestry work or tree pruning, regardless of the power source. The conditions for EG type examination are regulated by Article 2, points 3 and 4 of the Machinery Directive.
Deliveries
Once all the requirements are met and any deficiencies have been addressed, you will receive a final report and a certificate of EG type examination, confirming that the chainsaw has been approved. You can then proceed with CE marking and issue an EG declaration of conformity for the machine's compliance.

Delivery time
The EG type control report will be delivered within three weeks after the completion of the EG type control. Upon successful completion of the EG type control, an EG type control certificate will be issued. The certificate is valid for five years.
Preparations
In order for us to perform an EG type control, the chainsaw needs to be complete and operational, and the documentation according to Annex 7 of the directive needs to be available.
